"The River is more family oriented than other food pantries I've been to. Other places basically kick you in and kick you out again. I know a lot of people who use The River.  It's made a real difference in their lives."

The River is Dane County's busiest food pantry and in 2015 welcomed 30,605 family visits.

March is The River's Busiest Month Ever

Last month not only marked The River's 5th anniversary, but was also the busiest month we have ever had.  We received a record 2,528 client visits and distributed well over 50 tons of food.

Seeing 175 families come to us for help for the first time in March is a clear sign that continued unemployment and rising gas and food costs are hitting families hard.  I spoke with a number of first-time River users.

One shared that he was a web developer and hadn't worked for a month and a half because there simply "wasn't any work."  He had come to The River because he had heard about it from friends.

Another gentleman, who was clearly emotional about being at a food pantry, shared that he had been out of work for a year. With quivering voice he explained that he had to put his dog to sleep that week, and because of the extra expense, "the money had run out."

These are heartbreaking and scary situations that so many of our neighbors are facing.  The River provides not only food, but a community where people find they are not alone and the hope that comes with knowing someone cares.

Thank you for your donations of food, clothing and finances that allow The River to keep meeting the growing need.

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."
