"The River makes a huge difference for us. When we come here I get canned goods and healthy food for the kids that they actually like such as granola bars, yogurt or cereal. We can’t afford to buy those items, and I know it seems like a small thing, but it’s a big deal for them. We’ve been coming here for a year and the money we save really helps our budget options.”

Client & Mom of 2

The River is Dane County's busiest food pantry and in 2015 welcomed 30,605 family visits.

Andy Czerkas - Director

Andy

I grew up in northwestern Ohio, graduated from Bowling Green State University and then taught high school in Elyria Ohio. I came to Madison, like so many others to attend the UW and like so many others, fell in love with the city and decided to stay here. Until 2013 I was an information technology instructor at Madison College.

Early in our marriage, Jenny and I decided to spend a big part of our lives serving others. So in 2000, Jenny and I started to be involved with the Packer Townhouse and Northport Apartment neighborhoods. A group from our church joined together with the staff and residents of the neighborhoods to provide monthly community dinners, Christmas parties and back to school picnics.

In 2005 we started the River Food Pantry, as a response to needs expressed by our friends in those neighborhoods. I love my work at The River and the people we serve. In my free time, I like to read. Jenny and I also love to travel.

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."
