Food Pantry Volunteers: Below are the times of day we need help at the pantry. Please arrive on time for a brief pre-session volunteer orientation and job assignment. Mobile Lunch Program Volunteers: The River is also looking for volunteers to help with our new program, Madison Urban Nutritional Children's Hotspot (MUNCH). This program provides mobile lunch services directly to children and teens within their local neighborhoods, where it is needed most. MUNCH bridges the gap that exists when school lunch is not available on weekends and over school breaks. Individual and group volunteer opportunities are available for both sandwich production at the pantry and site service at the neighborhoods. *Monday 1-4pm Clean facilities, stock shelves, sort clothing and other miscellaneous projects.
Volunteers MUST contact The River staff and sign-up to help. We are not open to the public for shopping at this time. 
Tuesday 11am-1pm
Assist clients as they shop the food pantry and help clients in the clothing area. Lunch is provided for volunteers at 1pm. 
Tuesday 4:30-6:30pm Assist clients as they shop the food pantry, help clients in the clothing area and serve a community meal.
*Wednesday 1-4pm Clean facilities, stock shelves, sort clothing and other miscellaneous projects.

Thursday 11am-1pm
Assist clients as they shop the food pantry and help clients in the clothing area. Lunch is provided for volunteers at 1pm.
Thursday 4:30-6:30pm Assist clients as they shop the food pantry, help clients in the clothing area and serve a community meal.
Friday 1:30-3:30pm Meal preparation in our kitchen.  Volunteers MUST contact The River staff and sign-up to help.  
Friday 4:50-8pm Assist clients as they shop the food pantry, help clients in the clothing area, serve a community meal.
Saturday 8:30-11am Make sandwiches at the pantry for the new mobile lunch program.  Volunteer with Mobile Urban Nutritional Children's Hotspot (MUNCH) program.

11:15am-2pm Volunteers meet at the pantry to gather necessary supplies, load the truck, and then go to the neighborhood to bring lunch service to children. All volunteers must be over age 16 unless approved.  Volunteer with the Mobile Urban Nutritional Children's Hotspot (MUNCH) program.

Wondering what it's like to volunteer at The River?

 

The River runs on volunteers. Hundreds of people donate their time weekly to stock shelves, cook, serve meals, or guide clients through the Pantry.

You don't have to go through an extensive application process to volunteer at The River. Individuals and small families can just show up and pitch in! Groups must pre-register by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We need help stocking shelves, sorting clothing, serving food, cleaning, monitoring the children's play area, and more. We also welcome assistance from people with professional skills.

 

Who can volunteer?

Just about anyone. Most of our volunteers are individuals, but we encourage and welcome organized groups to lend us a hand, such as:

  • Teams from churches
  • Teams from college organizations
  • Teams from community organizations
  • Employees given time off by their companies to do community work

 

The Wisconsin Badger Connection

The River Food Pantry is operating a concession stand at all the University of Wisconsin football and men's basketball games. The River receives a percentage of all concession sales and all funds raised will go directly to paying for food for the needy. Please consider volunteering to help us out. Professional Volunteering Opportunities:

The River also occasionally needs volunteer professional expertise in the following areas:

  • Fundraising
  • Special event coordination
  • Grant writing
  • Truck maintenance
  • Legal services
