The River is South Central Wisconsin’s busiest food pantry. We are looking for an experienced, strategic, collaborative part-time Controller to join our team to manage the accounting operations of the organization to assist in reaching The River’s goals. The position is part-time working 15-20 hours per week with flexibility regarding which days of the week are worked. There may be additional hours required during the audit period which runs from December through February.
In this role, you will contribute to our mission of providing food, resources, and faith to build a stronger community by:
- Managing The River’s overall cash flow and financial results supporting operations, grants, development teams, and capital campaigns.
- Ensure all accounts payable transactions are processed and contributions are recorded in a timely manner within established policies and procedures.
- Analyze data and financial records to identify and recommend strategic opportunities to the Executive Director and Finance Committee.
- Maintain and adhere to a system of internal controls over accounting transactions.
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements.
- Make financial recommendations related to the new building project and serve as a resource to related committees.
- Prepare and manage the annual budget and maintain a complete and accurate fixed asset system.
- Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
- Assist the CPA firm with the internal audit and tax filing along with prepare annual 1099’s as necessary.
- Review and update financial policies and procedures as determined by local, state, and federal requirements or recommendations from the Executive Director, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Prepare and review bi-weekly payroll and maintain employee benefit elections within the payroll system.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- CPA preferred.
- 3+ years of demonstrated knowledge of general accounting principles and procedures is required.
- 2+ years of payroll processing, AR, and AP experience is required.
- Previous experience creating, modifying and maintaining Excel spreadsheets is required.
- Previous experience with QuickBooks is preferred.
- Previous experience in MS Office – Word and Outlook required.
- Previous experience in non-profit is preferred.
- Commitment to mission and goals of The River.
- Demonstrated customer service skills when interacting with internal and external customers in both verbal and written interaction is required.
- Ability to meet and maintain quality requirements in a timely manner to meet required deadlines.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to think strategically and provide recommendations that will continue to provide forward progress.
- Ability to follow established procedures and maintain confidentiality is required.
- Ability to work productively with limited supervision.
- Background check is required.
