Operations Specialist | The River Food Pantry

Position purpose
This position provides support to the operations of The River Food Pantry and its various teams: Food Recovery, Access, Meal, or Pantry. Job responsibilities differ based on the team and can include: driving an employer-owned vehicle to complete food recovery routes, sorting and boxing food, supporting the onsite and online pantry, coordinating with community partners, leading volunteers in each of these duties, and other duties as assigned. Specific job duties will be explained upon hire.

Compensation
Starting wage is $17 per hour. The River also offers group insurance plans, paid holidays, paid time off, and a retirement plan.

Hours
40 hours weekly, typically 5 days a week, Sunday–Friday depending on the position. Occasional weekends. Overtime as business needs require.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Display commitment to pantry mission and goals in ways such as putting the needs of others first, assuming responsibility for actions, decisions, and policies, respecting the diversity of others, acting with honesty and integrity, working collaboratively, and giving support to others, and connecting work to The River’s mission to provide a fully nourished community.
  • May include driving The River’s cargo van, box truck, and large truck for pickups from local wholesalers, grocery stores, and other locations as needed.
  • May include coordinating pick-ups of regular and one-time donations.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by keeping shelves, pallet area and market areas neat; organizing warehouse and market area for orderliness at all times. Assist with taking out garbage, recycling, and cardboard.
  • Loading and unloading of donation items, as well as sorting for quality of items.
  • Loading food products into customers’ vehicles, as they “drive through”.
  • Assist with documenting accurate incoming donation weight, as needed.
  • Sort and place donations on racks, shelves or in bins according to organizational and space standards.
  • Assist in unpacking cases of food and stock shelves to ensure sufficient amounts of food are available to clients.
  • Abide by all safety and hygiene regulations.
  • Safely operate equipment (e.g. dolly, pallet jacks).
  • Safely operate The River’s vehicles and obey traffic laws.
  • Record and maintain inventory of donated goods in the warehouse, freezers and coolers.
  • Comply with FIFO inventory practices in warehouse, coolers and freezers.
  • Provide appropriate receipts to donors upon request.
  • Maintain positive, effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and clients.
  • Communicate issues in a timely manner to Team Lead, and if needed to Director of Operations.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Clean driving record
  • Relevant work experience

Physical demands
This position involves a significant amount of physical labor, requiring prolonged periods of lifting, standing, stooping, and movement inside the pantry, as well as outside the building. Ability to manually lift or move materials up to 50 pounds. Work involves considerable exposure to various weather/temperature conditions and exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, and noise.
